A Happy and Thankful Life

figure it out

Today I’m thankful for a skill of mine, troubleshooting.

On Friday night, I had renewed my internet protection on my laptop. Once it was finished, I turned it off and then didn’t turn it back on until this morning. And I couldn’t connect to the internet. After restarting the router and testing the wifi with the phone and desktop, I was able to narrow it down to the laptop and the program renewal. I removed the program and was able to access the internet. I reinstalled the program and both the internet and program works.

Through my job I have learned the importance of identifying and isolating the problem before you change things. It is also helpful to see if other things are having the same issue. If not, that can eliminate a complete set of issues and fixes which makes your job easier.

Being able to troubleshoot technical problems was not always J’s strong suite. He could set up cords and the tv and sound system far better than me. But if something went wrong, he didn’t always have the patience to figure it out. He expected things to work the first time. I was the one better suited to figuring out the problem and fixing it. His job was to set it all up and my job was to figure it out. It worked for us.

Today, I was able to figure it out on my own, with a bit of help from my friend, the internet, and get it all in working order without too much frustration. Thank goodness for my skills honed at work!
